Visitor tax now closer for Stewart Island

9:58 am on 24 August 2011

Stewart Island is another step closer to introducing a tourist tax, after a Parliamentary select committee recommended the Government adopt the plan.

The Local Government and Environmental Select Committee believes the Southland District Council should be able to directly tax tourists heading to the island.

A bill giving that power to the council will have its second reading in the house next month.

The development has got other tourist centres wondering whether the Stewart Island model will set a precedent.

Queenstown Lakes Shaping our Future says it may be time for Queenstown to lobby for its own legislation for a bed tax or sales tax, to help pay for infrastructure.
