State house tenants in the Lower Hutt suburb of Pomare have called off a march on Parliament in protest at the demolition of nearly 90 state houses there.
They are upset that people might not be able to move back in when the area is rebuilt in about a year.
Officials from Housing New Zealand told a meeting on Thursday it is against Housing NZ policy because people who are in the greatest need get first access to houses, not those who used to live in the area.
However, Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says he will take the concerns that were raised at the meeting to Housing Minister Phil Heatley.
