A hand-sculptured brown leather horse design has won this year's supreme prize at the World of Wearable Art awards show in Wellington.

Mary Wing To from the United Kingdom won $22,500 in prizes for her leather sculptured horse, Hylonome.

The award was announced at the TSB Arena on Friday.

One of the judges, Suzie Moncrieff said the creation was a phenomenal representation of the beautiful mythological female centaur.

The garment showed Ms Wing To's skills as a fashion designer turned saddler, she said.

Ms Wing To, who worked with the Queen's master saddler at the Royal Mews, says the horse's head alone took 15 hours to shape.

The horse design is her third entry for the World of Wearable Art Awards.

A designer from the Netherlands, Marjolein van der Wal was Supreme runner up, with her garment Hide In My Bone Shadow.
