A 10-year-old boy has walked more than 20 kilometres to safety after getting lost during a hunting trip near Lumsden in Southland.

Police say the boy was pig hunting with family members in hill country.

They became separated and the two contacted police.

But before a search could be launched he had walked more than 20km over rugged terrain to a dairy farm.

Police say apart from complaining of sore feet he was uninjured.

Police say they are impressed by the boy's resilience but say people who get lost should stay put rather than try and walk to safety.
