Couple accused of regularly abusing girl to stand trial

The parents of girl accused of systematically abusing a nine-year-old girl are to stand trial.

The Auckland mother and father, who have name suppression, are facing 48 charges in total.

The mother is facing 36 charges, including using a hammer against the girl, tearing off her toenail and pouring salt and boiling water into the wound.

Her lawyer, Lorraine Smith, told the Auckland District Court on Tuesday she received new information from police that morning.

The Crown lawyer told the court the information is further allegations made by the girl when she was re-interviewed by police.

The father is facing 12 charges.

The couple were remanded on bail until 8 November when they are scheduled to appear at a callover hearing.

The trial is set down to begin on 21 November.
