Rules for novice motorcyclists to change

8:14 am on 2 September 2011

The Government is changing the rules for novice motorcyclists in an attempt to reduce deaths and injuries.

The Ministry of Transport says fatal and serious motorbike accidents have risen 80% since 2003 and riders are 20 times more at risk of death or injury than car drivers per km driven.

The changes include replacing the 250cc limit for learner riders with a new limit based on a motorcycle's power-to-weight ratio, to prevent learners starting on a bike which is too powerful for them.

A restriction of 70km per hour on learner riders will be removed and all new motorcylists will be required to spend the same amount of time on a restricted licence regardless of their age.
