Timaru businessman Allan Hubbard and his wife Jean have been seriously injured in a car crash in North Otago, police have confirmed.
A small car being driven by the Hubbards collided head-on with a four-wheel-drive vehicle about 5km north of Oamaru about 1pm.
Mr Hubbard, 83, has been flown to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition with multiple unspecified injuries.
His 82-year-old wife was driven to hospital by ambulance suffering from fractures.
The 40-year-old driver of the other vehicle has been treated and discharged.
Allan Hubbard is due to appear in court in October to answer 50 charges of fraud following a Serious Fraud Office investigation into failed companies he ran, including South Canterbury Finance.
Supporter Paul Carruthers says Mr Hubbard has been under "phenomenal stress" and the timing of the crash is awful.
Dunedin Hospital says the Hubbard family has asked for privacy and it will not be releasing any information on the couple's condition.
Police say the crash investigation could take several weeks and are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
