State Highway 3 in north Taranaki was reduced to one lane when a large truck carrying molasses collided with another vehicle on Friday night.
The ambulance service says 12 people were involved in the crash, which occurred near Mt Messenger, but just one received minor injuries.
The police say emergency services and council workers managed to contain the molasses and prevent it from entering waterways.
The road has since been fully reopened.
