NIWA says the emperor penguin dubbed Happy Feet is unlikely to be released on Saturday because of 10-metre sea swells.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) says the emperor penguin dubbed Happy Feet is unlikely to be released on Saturday because of 10-metre sea swells.

Happy Feet, who came ashore north of Wellington in June and was nursed back to health at Wellington Zoo, is aboard the NIWA fisheries research vessel Tangaroa.

The plan is to release him into his natural habitat in the Southern Ocean in the hope that he will make his way back to Antarctica.

NIWA says Happy Feet will remain aboard the Tangaroa until the heavy sea swells drop considerably.
