Submissions on funding cycle centre proposal split

7:48 am on 4 September 2011

The Waikato community is split over whether Waikato Regional Council should help fund the National Cycling Centre of Excellence.

The trust that wants to build the centre, which will include a velodrome near Cambridge, needs $6 million from the regional council.

It is estimated that the centre will cost nearly $30 million, of which it has guaranteed funding of $7 million from the Government.

The council called for public submissions on whether ratepayers should contribute, and says the 7000 responses showed a 60% to 40% split against.

A council-commissioned telephone survey found that 48% were against and 44% in favour.

Public hearings will be held next week, before councillors make a final decision on 14 September.
