A huge All Blacks sign has appeared on Wellington's Miramar Peninsula.

The sign was installed by Wellington Airport overnight on Sunday to show its support for the team during the Rugby World Cup.

An airport spokesperson says more international visitors will pass through the capital than ever before over the coming weeks, and this is an unmissable opportunity to demonstrate the level of excitement about the tournament and show its backing for the team.

A competition will decide what will follow the temporary All Blacks sign.

Wellington Airport had wanted to erect a large Wellywood sign where incoming tourists would see it, but the decision drew widespread criticism.

The airport says that as soon as the 'Wellywood or What?' competition ideas have been voted on by the public, the All Blacks sign will be changed for the most popular idea.
