Rugby World Cup dominates morning papers

7:25 am on 9 September 2011

No prizes for guessing that the Rugby World Cup dominates the front pages of the papers on Friday morning.

NZ Herald

The front page headline of The New Zealand Herald reads ''Bring it On'' with an introduction saying it's been 2123 days since New Zealand was announced as host of the Rugby World Cup.

France, New Zealand and England fans are pictured showing their colours at the Viaduct Basin, along with a report that extra tv ads will play immediately after Cup hakas and before the kickoff - except on Maori TV.

Half time breaks have also been lengthened for more ads.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post has a similar look, with a headline reading "Game On." A blackshirted rugby image with a bandaged hand is pictured over a series of bullet points featuring tournament facts and figures.

Inside, police are said to have seized thousands of fraudulent World Cup tickets, with one man deported to Africa as a result of the scam.

The Press

The Press has a scene from this week's opening ceremony dress rehearsal and an update on plans for the Christchurch Fanzone in North Hagley Park.

The zone has two 20 square metre screens which will play all 48 matches live, along with grandstand seating for 1000 fans.

ODT

It's another ''Game On'' in The Otago Daily Times where Richie McCaw is pictured over a montage of rugby images, with the paper's reporter in Auckland saying it's hard to miss that the tournament is upon us.

In Otago, it's a similar tale: shops are awash with bunting with fans counting down to the England - Argentina pool match in Dunedin on Saturday night.

The story finishes by looking back to the victory of 1987, hoping that result is repeated in 44 days time.
