Orca not seen since Thursday

A group searching for a lone orca calf spotted in Waitemata harbour hopes it has now moved to a safe area, or joined a pod.

The two-metre whale, believed to be between two and three years old, was spotted on Thursday in Okahu Bay, Auckland.

The Orca Research Trust says attempts to locate the calf on Friday were unsuccessful.

That means the whale was not stranded on a beach somewhere and had moved away from where boats had gathered for the Rugby World Cup festivities.
