Auckland firefighters forbidden to go to 9/11 memorial

6:19 pm on 10 September 2011

On-duty Auckland firefighters have been refused permission to go to Sunday's services commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, as a wage dispute rumbles on.

The Fire Service says it is not prepared to release appliances or crews while industrial action, which bans all work except emergency response, is ongoing.

Michael Powell, from the firefighters union, says industrial action should not get in the way of commemorating their colleagues who died in the attacks, and they say the edict will leave staff very upset.

Management at a local level is allowing one truck and crew to attend the Auckland service.
