Recalled hearing implant not a danger

People who have been fitted with an ear implant device that appears prone to failures are being advised not to worry.

Australian firm Cochlear has recalled unimplanted products from its Nucleus CI512 range after identifying a recent increase in the number of failures.

The company on Monday announced a voluntary recall of unimplanted devices.

It is estimated that 190 New Zealanders have the implant, which enables those who are profoundly deaf to hear.

Surgeons and the company stress there is no danger, and anyone who does have an implant should continue as normal.

Cochlear says less than 1% have failed and it will fund any replacements that are needed.
