NZ patrol attacked in Afghan province

5:00 pm on 19 September 2011

The New Zealand Defence Force says investigations are continuing into an attack on one of its patrols in Afghanistan.

No-one was injured in the incident in Bamyan province on Monday.

The three-vehicle convoy with a new deployment of 12 soldiers on their first patrol were attacked just after midnight (local time) and shot at with a rocket-propelled grenade.

The Commander of Joint Forces says soldiers from the Provincial Reconstruction Team damaged the back of a light-armoured vehicle hitting a bank while trying to escape.

Major General Dave Gawn says night patrols provide soldiers with a greater degree of security to move through areas subject to these kinds of attacks.

He says since 2008 there have been up to about 10 such attacks and they will know more about the latest incident on Tuesday.
