Consumer changes help butcher businesses survive

Traditional butchers in Dunedin say they are seeing a resurgence in trade after many tough years, buoyed by the growing success of farmers' markets.

Otago farmers market general manager John More says he already has seven meat stalls and a waiting list of others who want to get in.

Mr More says more consumers are wanting to know where their meat comes from and how it has been handled.

A butcher in the suburb of St Kilda, Jeff Sawyer, says business is now improving because of that trend, and its helping keep shops alive in what has been a dying trade.

The one remaining butcher in the northern side of Dunedin, Neville Eskrick, is retiring after 50 years of service.

Mr Eskrick says he has a number of offers to buy the business but is trying to find someone who will continue his traditional practices.
