'Crazy' ban on buses going to top of Mt Eden

5:35 pm on 21 September 2011

A tour bus operator says an Auckland Council ban on buses visiting the summit of one of Auckland's key landmarks is crazy.

The council has banned heavy vehicles from the summit of Mt Eden from mid-December.

The owner of Auckland Explorer Bus, Mark Gibson, says operators were only told the official date on Monday and that is far too little notice.

Mr Gibson also says most operators will probably cut Mt Eden completely from their itinerary if they can't take tourists right to the top.

The council says the ban will make Mt Eden a quieter and safer place. A shuttle service to the summit will still be available.

The former Auckland City Council signalled the ban in 2007 when it adopted its reserve management plan after consultation.
