Major meth-making crime syndicate uncovered

5:00 pm on 22 September 2011

Police say they have uncovered a major crime syndicate involved in manufacturing and selling methamphetamine in the upper North Island.

Officers in Northland say they searched addresses in Whangarei, Auckland, Pakiri and Wellsford and found three methamphetamine-making laboratories.

They say one lab, in the Auckland suburb of Howick, was found in a shipping container.

Police say the alleged offenders were regularly renting motels, baches and holiday accommodation to use for the manufacture of methamphetamine.

A 37-year-old South Auckland man facing several charges will appear in the Manukau District Court next Thursday.
