An auction of a collection of coins, banknotes and stamps with an estimated worth of more than $2 million is being held in Wellington on Friday and Saturday.

The auctioneer and founder of the Mowbray Collectables event, John Mowbray, says New Zealand coins and stamps attract interest from all over the world.

He says most items are sourced from within the country, and more than 60% are bought by overseas buyers.

This year's auction includes a never-before-seen series of stamp drafts from almost 120 years ago, estimated to sell for $25,000.
