Former All Black Jonah Lomu is in Auckland hospital receiving treatment for kidney problems.

Lomu, 36, was diagnosed with a kidney disorder in 1995 and received a transplant in 2004.

Auckland Hospital says he is in a stable condition in the renal and liver transplant ward.

Lomu made his All Black debut against France in 1994 and was the star of the Rugby World Cup in South Africa in 1995.

He had 63 caps for the All Blacks and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007.

He played a starring role in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup at Eden Park on 9 September.

All Blacks assistant coach Steve Hansen says he is sorry to hear about Lomu's illness and wishes him a speedy recovery.
