Dunedin police have recovered a rifle used in a confrontation between two gangs that resulted in a shooting at the weekend.

Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson says there are concerns about retribution after the shooting of a senior Black Power member who remains in hospital on Monday.

The man was shot in the arm during a fight with the Mongrel Mob that began about 4pm in suburb of Liberton.

Police have posted armed guards at two houses in Pine Hill Road and Allenby Avenue while scene examinations are carried out.

Eight members of the gangs are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Dylan Jordan Hill in relation to the shooting. Police say the 19-year-old is considered dangerous.

Mr Hill is 1.74 metres tall of medium build, with dark hair. He has a bulldog tattoo on the left side of his face.
