200,000 young not enrolled to vote

9:43 am on 27 September 2011

Almost 200,000 people under the age of 30 are not enrolled to vote in the general election on 26 November.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre says more than 120,000 people aged between 18 - 24 are yet to enrol and nearly 60,000 people in their mid to late 20s have not registered either.

The centre says those who choose not to enrol are putting decisions about their future into the hands of others.

People aged 18 or over are required by law to enrol, although it is not compulsory to vote.

Electoral rolls close for printing on 20 October.
