The West Coast District Health Board says it is considering funding a whooping cough booster shot for people working with young children.

There has been a community-wide outbreak of whooping cough around Hokitika township, with 152 cases reported to health authorities by 20 September.

A board spokesperson says staff are now working out how to make the booster shot available but says early childcare workers and healthcare professionals working with children are likely to be targeted.
