The pilot of a small aircraft that crashed on farmland in eastern Bay of Plenty has escaped with moderate injuries.

The Storm-300 light sport aircraft went down on farmland near Downard Road, north of Taneatua, at about 10.20am on Thursday.

Emergency services were sent from Whakatane and Edgecumbe.

The Fire Service says the pilot was out of the aircraft by the time crews arrived.

St John Ambulance says the pilot suffered back injuries when his plane went into a spin and made a heavy landing.

He was treated at the scene and then flown by rescue helicopter to Tauranga Hospital.

The Civil Aviation Authority is sending two investigators to the crash site.
