Weapons seized at Dunedin gang house

8:37 pm on 29 September 2011

Police have seized a number of weapons from a Dunedin house at the centre of a gang shooting at the weekend.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called out again on Thursday to the suburb of Liberton after reports of a rifle in the backyard.

Police had already been watching the house in Pine Hill Road when a neighbour reported seeing the firearm about 12.45pm.

The Liberton Christian School was locked down and all traffic stopped for about two hours.

Armed police searched the property and 18 people inside, but found only a number of axes and knives.

Local residents say Black Power members had gathered from Timaru and Invercargill to support local leader Albert Epere who was to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Epere was shot in the arm on Sunday during a confrontation with Mongrel Mob members gathered at a house around the corner from his home.

Mr Epere ended up not appearing on a charge of unlawful assembly but was bailed to his home under 24-hour curfew, as were five other gang members who have been bailed to addresses around the city.
