Lawyers for a man charged with murdering a New Zealand nurse in Australia have accused his wife of lying to police.

Nursing manager Michelle Beets was stabbed and had her throat slit outside her Chatswood home in April last year after returning from a shift at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital.

Former United States marine Walter Marsh is on trial accused of murdering Ms Beets who had been his boss at the hospital, the ABC reports.

Prosecutors say Marsh killed Ms Beets because she had given him bad employment references.

Samantha Marsh told the New South Wales Supreme Court that her husband confessed to the killing.

But on Friday, defence lawyer Keith Chapel accused her of lying about the confession and other details of the case.

"I know what I believe," Mrs Marsh replied to the suggestion.

During cross-examination he asked Mrs Marsh whether she has received financial help from police.

Mrs Marsh said she had been receiving weekly payments of $350 since December, plus assistance to rent a house.

When pressed, Mrs Marsh was unable to say exactly how much she had been given since she began assisting police.
