Sex offender 'received no treatment' while on supervision

The lawyer who acted for a man jailed indefinitely for repeat sexual offending has raised concerns about the conditions his client was held in while on an extended supervision order.

Shane Stoneham, 27, was sentenced to preventive detention in the High Court at Wellington on Friday on one charge of sexual connection with a girl under 16 and three charges of breaching the order.

The order was imposed after earlier sexual offending; one victim was a four-year-old girl.

His latest offending was against a 13-year-old girl.

During sentencing, Stoneham's lawyer Chris Tennent said his client received no treatment while on the order and he was concerned about the conditions in which Stoneham had been held.

He said the regime was similar to a notorious programme run in Auckland prison some years ago which was found to breach prisoners' human rights.

Order breached

The Corrections Department is satisfied with the way it handled Stoneham and the relationship he was having with a 13-year old girl.

The department's general manager of Community Probation Services, Katrina Casey, says that when Stoneham attended a meeting with the girl, his probation officer issued an order for him not to make contact with her until he could prove she was over 16.

Despite the warning, Stoneham continued the relationship.

Ms Casey says the agency monitoring Stoneham 24 hours a day was advised he had breached the order and the contract with the agency was terminated.

Shane Stoneham met the girl online and proposed to her when they met in person.
