Police say a man killed on Sunday after being struck by a taxi van in Hamilton had been drinking.

Police say witnesses noticed the man, 27, who wandered on to Thackeray Street and into the path of the vehicle, at about 3.30am.

Waikato police inspector Leo Tooman says the man had been drinking in the area.

He says the man's death is the seventh on Hamilton city streets this year and the seventh pedestrian fatality in the Waikato district.

He says with revellers expected in Hamilton for Sunday evening's match between Wales and Fiji, people need to remember to drink responsibly.
