KiwiRail says about 100 metres of overhead lines have come down and buses have replaced trains between Masterton to Wellington.
Services to Melling have also been replaced by buses between Wellington and Melling.
It says contractors are trying to fix the problem as soon as possible and it expects all services to be back to normal before midday on Monday.
