Wellington City Council is putting up $100,000 to encourage community bonding.

The intention is to build stronger communities, so people will be better able to support one another when a disaster strikes.

The council says there is $100,000 for two rounds of applications this year, for events or gatherings which encourage social interaction and bonding.

Councillor Stephanie Cook says it is about reaching those who are not connecting.

Applications can be made by any community group.
