NZ Government told asylum seekers have rights too

Amnesty International is calling for the New Zealand Government to uphold its human rights obligations to asylum seekers.

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister said a boat load of 80 Sri Lankan asylum seekers trying to make their way to New Zealand, were not welcome.

Amnesty secretary general Salil Shetty says asylum seekers have rights and New Zealand must follow due process.

He says New Zealand receives hardly any asylum seekers compared to European nations and needs to follow correct processes.
