A passenger rail service between Hamilton and Auckland is a step closer, with Auckland Council supporting a two year trial.
A service between the two cities operated in 2000 but ended a year later because of low passenger numbers.
Early last year, a petition with almost 12,000 signatures was presented to the Auckland and Waikato Regional Councils calling for the service to be reinstated.
Auckland Council's transport committee has agreed to support a trial daily service next year and to look at other factors regarding a long-term service.
Waikato Regional Council is still to give its backing.
