Case of meningococcal disease confirmed in Taranaki

5:30 pm on 5 October 2011

One of two cases of suspected meningococcal infection in Taranaki has been confirmed as meningococcal disease.

A child under the age of 10 and a young person were diagnosed early this week as suspected cases.

Taranaki usually gets one or two confirmed cases in a year, but has had three so far this year.

The district health board says one case was confirmed on Tuesday; the other can't be confirmed, it says, but is probably meningococcal disease.

Both patients are doing well, and one has been discharged from hospital.
