A New Zealand woman is in a critical condition in New York after a helicopter crash which killed an Australian woman.

Four passengers were on board the Bell 206 tourist helicopter that crashed into New York's East River on Tuesday.

One of the passengers, an Australian woman, was trapped inside the sinking vessel and was killed.

The ABC reports that the woman who died was Sonia Mara Nicholson, a British woman who had been living in Sydney, who had been visiting New York with family to celebrate her 40th birthday.

A Radio New Zealand correspondent in New York says the helicopter experienced problems directly after takeoff and that an investigation has found a rotor blade was missing.
