Gorge road closure costly for local firms

11:58 am on 6 October 2011

Businesses near the Manawatu Gorge say they will struggle to stay afloat now that the road through the gorge will remain closed for at least another two months

A slip has closed State Highway 3 through the gorge since August, forcing vehicles onto the Pahiatua Track and the Saddle Road.

The Manawatu region's economic development agency estimates the closure is costing local businesses $62,000 a day.

The owner of the Bridge Cafe, near Woodville, Rebecca Algie, says she's had to close during the week and let staff go, and may not be able to survive the next two months

And the owner of the Fishspot fish and chip shop in Woodville, John Gooding told Nine to Noon he's lost at least 40% of his custom thanks to the closure.

Mr Gooding says he's frustrated that the Transport Authority and other local officials haven't done anything to help local businesses.
