Steve Gurney charged over railway crossing crash

Police have laid charges against endurance athlete Steve Gurney over a crash with a passenger train north of Christchurch.

Mr Gurney, who has won the Coast-to-Coast multisport race nine times, was was driving his Subaru wagon over a rural railway crossing in Rangiora when he was hit about 7.30am on 20 September.

He was not seriously injured.

Senior Sergeant Warren Newbury, of Rangiora, says Mr Gurney has been charged with careless use of a motor vehicle.

If convicted, he could face a fine of up to $3000 and disqualification from driving.
