Taxi company's licence revoked ahead of big weekend

A Wellington taxi company has had its licence revoked at a time when the capital is hosting thousands of Rugby World Cup fans.

The Transport Agency says Amalgamated Taxis stopped operating last Sunday.

A spokesperson for the agency says about 80 drivers are working temporarily for another company, but 20 others are without a job.

Anthony Frith would not reveal why the licence was revoked, as Amalgamated Taxis still has time to appeal against the decision.

Mr Frith says although more than three times the usual number of people are expected to arrive at Wellington Airport on Friday, he does not expect the company's shutdown to disrupt transport at the weekend.
