KiwiRail says it's had an amazing response to a nationwide search for new train drivers.

About 750 people have applied for 60 traineeships on offer this year.

Chief executive Jim Quinn says 100 new drivers will be needed over the next two years to cope with increased demand for rail freight and passenger services.

Training to be a driver takes up to two years.
