People in Bay of Plenty and Gisborne are being urged to prepare for heavy rain from Tuesday night.
MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the region for Tuesday and Wednesday, saying up to 250 millimetres of rain could fall in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges and up to 150 millimetres on the coast.
It is also forecasting up to 170 millimetres of rain in northern Gisborne.
MetService says the heavy rain is likely to cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly and may also cause slips.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council has advised farmers to move stock to higher ground.
The council's flood manager, Mark James, says it will closely monitor weather conditions.
