Some Auckland businesses are warning the future development of some of the city's most prestigious real estate could be neglected, as residents focus on the Rugby World Cup.

The Auckland Council's 30-year plan is out for public submissions, which close just two days after the tournament ends.

Heart of the City chief executive Alex Swney says the public are unaware of plans to expand the port's loading area, including the extension of a wharf.

He says playgrounds at the newly redeveloped Wynard Quarter on the waterfront could also be turned into apartment complexes.

Mr Swney says the council appears to have differing views to the public, and residents need to realise the plan could have long-term consequences for the city.
