8:00 am on 15 October 2011

A New Zealand man being held in police custody in Fiji is reported to have been charged with writing seditious comments.

Jagath Karunaratne appeared in court with four co-accused on Friday, having been detained for questioning for seven days.

Fiji media reports the five men are charged with conspiring to write seditious words in public places and billboards along the Nausori and Suva roads.

All five pleaded not guilty, and have been remanded in custody to reappear in court on 21 October.

The New Zealand High Commission in Fiji says it is providing Mr Karunaratne with consular assistance.
