Three of the survivors from a plane crash in Papua New Guinea, including the New Zealand co-pilot, have been flown from a local hospital to the capital Port Moresby.

Twenty-eight people died when the Airlines PNG Dash-8 on board crashed during a violent storm near the town of Madang on the north coast about 5pm on Thursday.

Among the four survivors were New Zealand co-pilot Campbell Wagstaff and Australian pilot Bill Spencer.

An Australian High Commission official in Madang says Mr Spencer's leg was badly injured, the ABC reports.

Campbell Wagstaff's father, Mike Wagstaff, says he has spoken to his son, and he is unhurt.

The flight data recorders have been retrieved from the wreckage.
