Two people thrown through car window in Tauranga

9:03 pm on 15 October 2011

Two people have been thrown through the window of a car in accident that closed the Tauranga Harbour Bridge on Saturday.

Police say an Audi car was approaching a police checkpoint at about 7.30pm, when it suddenly sped backwards against two lanes of oncoming traffic.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders says the car then struck another, sending the two rear seat passengers through the back window.

Mr Saunders says alcohol was a factor in the crash, and the driver and front-seat passenger have been arrested.

The Tauranga-bound lanes of the bridge were reopened at about 9pm.
