Residents fear effect of mining work under houses

Hauraki district mayor John Tregidga says his council is looking for ways to protect the value of houses if gold mining takes place beneath them.

The Newmont Waihi Gold mine says it will apply for consent next year to mine below residential properties in Waihi East, at a depth of more than 100 metres.

Mr Tregidga says residents at a public meeting in Waihi on Friday expressed concern their houses would be devalued by the mining.

Mr Tregidga says to get consent, the company will have to show it won't damage the houses.

He says when a resource consent application is lodged it will be considered by independent commissioners.
