Police have charged a driver whose car reversed away from a police checkpoint and hit another in a collision that sent two passengers through a window.

The Audi was in the Tauranga-bound lanes of the Harbour Link at Mount Maunganui at about 7.30pm on Saturday when it suddenly reversed against two lanes of oncoming traffic.

Sergeant Owen O'Brien says the car then hit another travelling towards it, sending the two rear seat passengers through the back window.

They were cut free after an hour were taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The 32-year old male driver has been charged with having excess breath alcohol, and is expected to face further charges.

His front-seat passenger was also arrested but later released with a warning.

The incident closed the Tauranga Harbour Bridge for a time. Tauranga-bound lanes bridge were reopened at about 9pm on Saturday.
