The family of a New Zealand man being held in Fiji on sedition charges says officials in Wellington need to liaise directly with the military regime.

Jagath Karunaratne and four other men appeared in court last Friday charged with writing seditious comments in public places.

Mr Karunaratne had been detained for questioning for seven days before the court appearance.

A family member Rajesh Singh, who is part of the pro-democracy movement, says he has received assistance from the New Zealand High Commission in Suva.

However, he would like the Minister of Foreign Affairs or the Prime Minister to talk directly with Fiji's interim regime.

Rajesh Singh says the five men are due to reappear in court on Friday.
