Former MP leaves prison

Former Labour MP Phillip Field left Spring Hill Prison in Waikato on Monday on parole two years into his six-year sentence.

He was jailed in October 2009 after being found guilty of giving immigration favours to Thai people in exchange for work on his properties and of perverting the course of justice.

He was the first New Zealand Member of Parliament ever jailed for corruption.

In an unusual move, Field was granted release at his first parole hearing earlier in October.

The Parole Board is yet to detail the reasons for the decision.

Field's wife Maxine Gallagher-Field has previously said her husband has served enough time and is more useful out in the community.
