Otago, Canterbury roads affected by flooding

10:29 pm on 19 October 2011

Heavy rain has been drenching southern regions of New Zealand, closing roads and causing slips.

MetService says Christchurch experienced its wettest day since May last year with 47 millimetres of rain falling throughout Wednesday.

By evening, the rain had eased off in Canterbury and Otago and floodwaters were receding.

The Christchuch City Council says the Heathcote River breached its banks in several areas but while roads flooded, no water entered people's homes.

Some residents out in Little River were stranded for a time. State Highway 75 between Birdlings Flat and Little River has since reopened.

The Christchurch City Council is advising drivers to be cautious and watch out for potholes caused by recent earthquakes which may be obscured by surface flooding.

Part of SH1 in North Otago closed

The Transport Agency says part of State Highway 1 in North Otago is closed overnight on Wednesday due to flooding.

The section north of Oamaru near Pukeuri is shut and a diversion is in place via State Highway 83 and Seven Mile Road.

Transport Agency operations manager Murray Clarke contractors are having trouble draining the water which is up to half a metre deep in places.

Slips in Dunedin

Roading contractors have been clearing slips and trees from roads throughout Otago and Southland on Wednesday following heavy rain.

The Dunedin City Council says the Silverstream Valley Road remained blocked on Wednesday and the Mount Cargill Road will take at least another day to clear.

Portobello Road on the Otago Peninsula has reopened.

West Otago roads

Six West Otago roads are open again on Wednesday after flooding.

The Clutha District Council says the roads are Black Gull West, Wood Hill, Ardmore, Greenvale, Winslade and Beatties.

Koi Flat Road remains closed as water has scoured the surface.

Two roads in the Burke's Ford area - Ross Road and MacFarlane Road - remain closed, but the council says the Pomahaka River level is falling and the roads should be open again on Thursday morning.

The Pomahaka bridge on State Highway 90 is open.
