Power company fined $75,000 over 'preventable' death

A company has been fined $75,000 after for what has been described as the preventable death of a worker who fell 15 metres from a power pole.

The Delta Utility Services linesman, who was doing work on the power pole near Dunedin, died when the pole came out of the ground and fell sideways in December last year.

The Department of Labour says the pole had earlier been identified as unsafe but that was not properly communicated to the man who had 40 years' experience as a linesman.

It says the pole should have been made fixed before further work was carried out and it should have been clearly marked as unsafe.
